Police say an El Mirage couple whose child was literally crawling with cockroaches blamed their kids for the deplorable condition of their home, saying they were not cleaning up after themselves.

Police say they found Richard Garcia Jr. and Sabrina Garcia's six children, ranging from 4- to 12-years old, living in disgusting conditions Sunday evening in their home in the 11500 block of Windrose Drive. Police say they were hit by the smell of rotting food and trash and found cockroach nests in every corner of the house as well as a glass marijuana bong.

"One of the small children had cockroaches crawling on his leg while he stepped in what appeared to be rotting refried beans on the floor," a police news release said.

"As officers walked through the residence, the walls from floor to ceiling were infested with cockroaches," the statement added. "The bedrooms were littered with food, clothes and children's toys, which were covered with cockroaches."

The couple were arrested on suspicion of child abuse.

Police were responding to a threats call and said Sabrina Garcia said she was having a verbal argument."While speaking with Sabrina Garcia, officers observed several small children through the window," the statement said. "When Sabrina Garcia opened the front door to let officers check welfare on the children, they were hit by the smell of rotting food and trash."
